High-Growth of PASE Allows for Full-Service Practice to Move into Larger Facility Alongside an Expanded Veterinary Specialty Team this Fall

On July 12, 2022, Philadelphia Animal Specialty & Emergency (PASE), a 100% veterinarian owned and privately-held animal specialty and emergency hospital, shared a set of its latest renderings for the new 11,000 square foot medical center at 2100 Washington Avenue. Currently sharing space with Washington Ave Animal Hospital (WAAH), located at 1920 Washington Avenue, PASE is projected to move into its new home this fall and will offer full-service emergency & specialty care for pets of Philadelphia and the surrounding area.

PASE Location: 2100 Washington Avenue Renderings

"With more sick pets than doctors available to treat them, we felt called to bring our expertise as board-certified critical care doctors to the city and we are pleased with the reception we’ve received from local veterinarians and pet parents,” says Dr. Emily Dozeman and Dr. Erik Zager, who are both founders of the hospital. “With a larger facility, we will be able to care for more patients.”

The PASE Team is comprised of nearly 100 esteemed veterinary medicine professionals, doctors and staff, boasting an unparalleled level of expertise in the industry. Although best known for its 24/7 Emergency & Critical Care service, PASE also established itself as a specialty center, offering an array of specialty services for regional pet owners. PASE presently offers Cardiology, Surgery, Internal Medicine, Critical Care, and Diagnostic Imagining (CT and Ultrasound), as well as a Blood Bank Donation program.

Announcing: New Partners & Services at PASE

PASE made its mark in Philadelphia and the tri-state area when they first opened their doors in June 2021. PASE’s first year in the city proved to be a success as demonstrated through the practice’s far-reaching geographic client base and expanding staff size. To keep up with this fast-paced growth, PASE is pleased to welcome an additional cohort of board-certified veterinary medicine professionals to the ownership team this summer and fall. This opportunity for the expansion of the partnership group was made possible by the decision of Dr. Pete Lands, the founder of WAAH and co-founder of PASE, to exit his entire equity stake in the hospital this past April. New partners include:

Surgery: Donny Astor, VMD, DACVS-SA, Head of Surgery (Service Launched: June 2022)

Neurology: Austin Kerns DVM, MS, DACVIM and Beryl Swanson, DVM, DACVIM; Co-Heads of Neurology (Service launches in October/November 2022)

Oncology: Lillie Davis DVM, DACVIM, Head of Oncology (Service launches in October/November 2022)

Ophthalmology: Elizabeth Lutz, DVM, MS, DACVO, Head of Ophthalmology (Service launches in August 2022)

Anesthesiology: Kathryn K. Zatroch, DVM, DACVAA, Head of Anesthesiology (Service launches in August 2022)

"I'm pleased to join PASE as a partner and as Head of Surgery in one of the few remaining independent veterinary emergency and specialty hospitals in the Philadelphia region. We have an amazing group of doctors, nurses and support staff with more exciting additions on the way. We are trained and equipped to provide a wide range of orthopedic and soft tissue surgery for pets in need," says Dr. Donny Astor, VMD, DACVS-SA. "Our team approach integrates all of the various departments in the hospital to ensure that we collaborate to provide excellent care for all of our patients. As we continue to grow and add new services, we are focused on maintaining that collaborative approach and personalized touch for our patients and clients."

The future of PASE

Keeping with its motto of, “Setting the PASE in Veterinary Specialty Care,” the plans don’t stop at the 11,000-square foot facility. In fact, construction will kick off this fall on a new 25,000 square foot facility located a block away at 1924 Washington Ave. When the larger facility is completed in the fall of 2023; the smaller facility at 2100 Washington Ave will be converted to an outpatient center where the Oncology, Ophthalmology, and other specialty services will reside. Part of this facility will also be converted into a parking garage capable of housing 26 client cars.
